About

Yoyoyo, it's me, the Gorge Guzzler

I'm an American living in Japan, and I really like climbing waterfalls. I also do some other stuff like camping, hiking, etc. (general outdoor enthusiast), but I'm trying to learn more about the great sport of waterfall climbing (沢登) and document what I do and learn along the way.

I got my start in waterfall climbing back in college when I found an epic NorthFace documentary on the topic. I was so stoked that I actually attempted to cover what I could in my vicinity.

Lucky for me, the Finger Lakes Region (shoutout upstate!) has some legitimately beautiful creek walking, gorge swimming, and hiking.

After moving to Los Angeles for my first job, I fostered my outdoor spirit with lots of hikinh and camping. I visited 5 or of California's 7 national parks and I summited Mt. Whitney (the tallest mountain in the continental US) after being in LA for only about a year.

For better or worse, I left CA shortly after these feats and moved to Japan to study food n stuff. I stufied Japanese food culture for a couple years before transitioning to working as a sensory scientist.

All that aside, I have really only recently been able to dive into the sawanobori sport in the ways I have wanted to. This page is in part an effort to document my journey and also make it more accessible for others to get involved. In time, I hope the resources I pull together on this page help to make the Japanese outdoors more accessbile and fun. That in mind...

SAWANOBORI IS AN INTENSE AND DANGEROUS SPORT. IT SHOULD NEVER BE ATTEMPTED ALONE OR WITHOUT THE HELP OF AN EXPERIENCED GUIDE
